What Is Web3? A Plain-English Guide

Web3 is a broad term for a vision of the internet built on blockchains, where users own their data, assets, and identity rather than renting them from big platforms.

From read to own

The idea is often framed in eras: an early “read-only” web, today’s “read-write” social web owned by large companies, and a proposed “read-write-own” web where tokens and wallets give users a direct stake. Whether Web3 delivers on that promise is genuinely debated.

Where the metaverse fits

The metaverse — persistent virtual worlds — and on-chain gaming are often lumped in with Web3 because they use the same tools: tokens, NFTs for digital goods, and wallets for identity. Some of this is useful; much of it has been over-hyped and speculative.

Our stance

We cover Web3 with curiosity and skepticism in equal measure, explaining what the technology can do before weighing what it is worth. See Web3 & Metaverse and our glossary.
