Before a central bank digital currency reaches the public, it typically goes through years of research and controlled pilots. Understanding that process helps make sense of the news in The CBDC Watch. This is reporting, not advice.

From research to pilot

Most CBDC programmes start with research and design papers, then move to limited pilots with selected banks, businesses, and consumers. Pilots test the technology, the two-tier distribution model (central bank plus commercial intermediaries), privacy safeguards, offline payments, and holding limits — often over several phases.

Why it is slow

A CBDC touches financial stability, privacy, and the role of commercial banks, so central banks move cautiously, and many have not decided whether to issue at all. We track each programme’s stage and sources on our CBDC pages, framed strictly as journalism — never as guidance to obtain or use any CBDC.

Reporting for information only — not legal advice or guidance to circumvent any law or sanction.
