Sentiment is the market’s mood — how fearful or greedy participants are — and it often drives short-term price swings as much as fundamentals do.
The Fear & Greed Index
One popular gauge is the Fear & Greed Index, a 0-100 score compiled by alternative.me from signals like volatility, momentum, and volume. Extreme fear can coincide with capitulation lows; extreme greed can mark froth. It is a thermometer, not a timing tool. We show it in our header and at /sentiment/.
Sentiment versus technicals
Technical analysis studies price and volume patterns; sentiment studies emotion. Both are inputs, not answers. Contrarians watch sentiment extremes precisely because the crowd is often most confident at turning points.
Use it carefully
No single indicator predicts the market. Sentiment is best used to check your own emotions — are you buying out of greed or selling out of fear? — rather than as a signal to act. None of this is advice.
